History

2024-07-15: at 18:08 or so, my services start working again. At 18:23 I get the text messages from GC (4 of them) telling me that the service has been restored.

2024-07-15: at 12:39 and 13:56, more text messages; fault finding in progres, no estimated time to restored service. But they claim "a couple of hours". The message on the "driftsmeldinger" page (GC doesn't call it that) was

2024-07-15: at 09:19 I got a call from the tech, he'll be here shortly. At 09:50 the tech have figured out that the fault is somewhere outside of the building (several hundred meters away).

2024-07-15: at 07:44 more text messages. GC still needs access to the CPE at our end for fault finding. So I called them. Unfortunately the customer support number they provided don't open until 08:00, so I had to wait until then to call them again. Helpful people at customer support, but they couldn't put me in contact with the tech people directly. Now awaiting a call from tech support.

2024-07-14: incident. at 20:15 I got a text message from GlobalConnect (GC), they had lost connection with the CPE at our end. Later they even called me, unfortunately I wasn't home.

2023-10-31: at 23:55 I got a text message from HomeNet (now GlobalConnect) that they've lost contact with CPE on my / our end. In the firewall logs I see

2023-09-05: at 08:46 local time, I got 4 (four!) text messages informing me that HomeNet had lost contact with the equipment (CPE) and that they wer working on fixing the problem.

2023-03-23: new CPE - Netel came and replaced the gateway with a Zyxel AM3100-B0 today (had to work from home and wait for them). It took a while to get a connection (lights on the gateway shows power, fiber, WAN and internet) but afterwards my firewall only got a private IP address (192.168.1.x) from it. From the installation guy, I got a suggestion to try LAN port 1 and 2 for public IP address. None of that helped. So I abandoned it and went to the office. After work I contacted customer support (I guess it's GlobalConnect now, not HomeNet) vi their chat. And they suggested LAN port 4 - which immediately worked. All is well that ends well, I guess.

2023-02-01: because of an electrical inspection, power was cut, so all services got restarted.

2021-11-02: IPv6 - answer from HomeNet: "Per dags dato tilbyr ikke vi IPv6, kun IPv4.". So no IPv6 on my service. Oh well.

2021-10-30: I sent HomeNet a message (via Kontaktskjema) asking if I can get IPv6 on my connection. We shall see what they answer.

2021-08-27: got a text message from HomeNet at 16:34, saying that they had lost contact with the equipment at my end. After verifying that the message was legitimate (and not a phishing attempt), I veified that I couldn't ping the router at home. So probably a local problem. I wasn't home at the time, so I postponed any more checks. When I got home this evening, I found out that two circuit breakers had tripped (4 and 6). After getting them reset, the process of starting all my machines got underway. The temporary firewall didn't power on automatically, it needed a manual press. On the bright side, all services on the firewall came up as configured - nice! Events:

2021-08-08: Late this evening, I finished setting up my new (temporary?) firewall: I used the HP Pavilion 590. My old firewall was using a quite old version of FreeBSD (9.3-stable), and that version didn't support all the network cards in the Pavilion 590. So I had to install a newer version of FreeBSD (11.4-release), install new packages and configure everything. As expected, the thing I spent most time on was bind; the current version in ports / packages was bind916 (bind 9.16), and that needed some subtle configuration changes to my named.conf file before forwarders started working.

2021-08-08: I re-created this page on my self-hosted web server.

2021-08-07: no internet connection this morning; this time it was my firewall. The XH61V had powered off, and refused to power on. Probably the motherboard, the power supply looked to be working. Alas, this means my internet connection will be down until I can find another machine and put into service.

2018-06-18: at 15:42 I received a text message from HomeNet: "Kjære kunde. Vi har problemer med sentralen du er tilknyttet. Du kan derfor ha mistet din forbindelse. Vi er på saken og forsøker å få deg på nett så fort som mulig. Hilsen HomeNet". I'm at the office, but a quick check showed that I couldn't ping my home. Got home after 21 (about 21:30). The problem was still present, so I decided to have a look at the switches again. Lamps showed that there wasn't any traffic flowing through the 10G uplink , so I applied the workaround from last time: unplug the uplink fibre connector from the 10G SFP on the topmost switch, wait a minute, plug it back in. Yes, it worked. Service restored at about 21:40.

2018-06-08: service down - message on HomeNet support web

08.06.2018 15:15 INC000000253747 - 0550 Oslo

Kjære kunde. Vi har problemer med sentralen du er tilknyttet. Du kan derfor ha mistet din forbindelse.
Vi er saken og forsøker å deg nett fort som mulig. Vi holder deg oppdatert! Hilsen HomeNet

good to know.

at 15:42 called HomeNet / BroadNet NOC to assist in on-site faultfinding. Did power off / power on on the two switches (Waystream ASR6026) but the link on the fibre to this site is still missing.
at 16:08 told NOC about the results. They will send a technician.
at 21:15 the technician calls, they're at Ekeberg.
at 21:34 two technicians arrive.

After five minutes they have found the problem, and "fixed" it. The problem was that the SFP on the uplink fibre (the one that connects this site with the network) was too hot. simply unplugging the SFP (don't touch the tip of the fibre cable!) and let it cool for a minute or two, then plug it back in. Specifications for the Waystream ASR6026-AC: Uplink: 2 x 10GE (SFP+) ports. Downlink: 24 x 100/1000BaseX (SFP) interfaces and 4 x 10/100/1000BaseTX (RJ-45) combo ports. Side-to-side cooling. All connectors in front. EUR AC power cable supplied.

2018-05-08: Genexis Platinum 6840 - the specs for the Platinum series claim "Line speed (1000 Mbps) routing performace for packets > 256 byte".
Other specs are: Platinum 6840: uplink: SFP + RJ-45, LAN ports 4 x 1000/100/10 Mbps, VoIP: POTS x 2, WLAN 2x2: 2.4 GHz 11n, 5 GHz 11ac, usb: 1 x port,

2018-04-13: arrived home late, but I still had to try it out, I disconnected my firewall from LAN port1 on the 6840, and connected it to LAN port 3. Hey presto - it works!

root@kg-omni1# ifconfig ext0
ext0: flags=8843<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> metric 0 mtu 1500
    options=8209b<RXCSUM,TXCSUM,VLAN_MTU,VLAN_HWTAGGING,VLAN_HWCSUM,WOL_MAGIC,LINKSTATE>
    ether 80:ee:73:60:61:0d
    inet 81.191.204.127 netmask 0xfffff000 broadcast 81.191.207.255
    nd6 options=29<PERFORMNUD,IFDISABLED,AUTO_LINKLOCAL>
    media: Ethernet autoselect (1000baseT <full-duplex,master>)
    status: active

very nice!

2018-04-12: got an answer from HomeNet support - LAN ports 3 and 4 gives you bridge mode and a public ip address - nice! (I could also put the 6840 into bridge mode by pressing the WPS button for 10 seconds, but this setting would only be valid until next reboot.

2018-04-11: the installation company installed the fiber, and a router (Genexis Platinum 6840). The service works, but I get a 192.168.1.x ip address from the router. I have sent a request to HomeNet asking if it is possible to configure bridge mode for this router.

2018-04-??: Received a (paper) note in my mailbox that physical installation in my apartment will happen on 2018-04-11.

2018-02-16: new info from HomeNet - access fibre installation further delayed - new date is 2018.05.01. Current supplier will supply services until 2018.06.01, we will be compensated.

2018-02-08: info from HomeNet - access fibre delivery is one month delayed (from one of their suppliers), delivery expected 2018.05.01. Our answer: we have a contract, we expect HomeNet to deliver to the date agreed on. How they provide us with service in an interim period while they are getting our new service ready is really their problem.

2018-02-07: feedback from HomeNet - installation plan on (revised) schedule.

2018-01-02: I registered at the web page provided by HomeNet.

2017-12-22: HomeNet informed that the fibre installation will be delayed one month (due to a delay in getting a permit for digging). So fibre from 2018.03.01 instead of 2018.02.01. The service agreement with Get is prolonged one month, so no gaps in service (hopefully).

2017-12-14: I received a letter (on real paper) from HomeNet with information about the new service, and a web page to register.
