- memory: 4096 MB, 4 x DIMMs in bank 0, 4 x DIMMs in bank 1 (was: 1024 MB, 4 x DIMMs in bank 0)
- graphics: PGX64 - ATI Rage XL (8MB SGRAM, PCI)
- hard drive: 18.2 GB - Segate Cheetah ST318203FC 10k rpm, in the lower slot (Note: this machine uses fibre channel (FC) drives)
- optical drive: yes
- floppy drive: no
- smart card reader: yes
OBP version: 4.13 - Release 4.13.0 created 2004/01/19 18:27
serial console: use a nullmodem (crossed) serial cable, connect it to port A, and use 9600-8-N-1 as parameters, like so: cu -l /dev/cuaU0 -s9600
.
stop-N: not possible with usb keyboard. Instead, wait until the green led in the power button blinks, then double-press the power button (like a double-click with the mouse).

History
2021-07-13: I re-created this page on my self-hosted web server.
2020-10-20: the machine restarted (rebooted?) by itself, then it turned the green light in the power button off. Perhaps the PSU needs fixing? Or perhaps it doesn't like to run without fan control for too long?
2020-10-20: memory - I replaced the memory in the machine with the memory I got from Magnus L. in Sweden. The machine required two power-ons; on the first one the machine didn't boot (no green light in power button, no fans starting), but on the second try it started. Memory is reported correctly
root@blade1k# sysctl hw.machine; sysctl hw.model;sysctl hw.physmem hw.machine: sparc64 hw.model: Sun Microsystems UltraSparc-III hw.physmem: 4281221120
ok.
2020-10-19: I re-seated the CPU by following the procedure for removing and installing in the document "816-3221-12_Sun Blade 1000 Ultrasparc III Cu Module.pdf", that helped. Power on the machine, The Sun badge lits up, a while later the fans spin up and the green light in the power button lights. Power down, insert the drive and try to boot it.
2014-09-24: I took out the hard drive - nope, the machine still won't boot. No green light in the power button, no beep, no fans. The SUN logo lights up, that's all.
2014-09-22: I changed the battery - that didn't help. Changed it back again. Took out the idprom chip and put it back again. Reseated the memory again. Still the machine won't boot - no green light in the power button. I also tested the interlock switch for the side cover - if you remove it the PSU turns off. Cool.
2014-09-21: trying to power up my Blade 1k today (keyboard, mouse and screen attached), it won't cooperate (no light in power switch). Reseated memory - didn't help. Checked the battery (CR1632) it is at 2.8V - maybe that's it. Clas Ohlson have it 32-3776, NOK 29.-
2013-03-15: the package from Sweden (Magnus L.) arrived in my mailbox.
2013-03-13: Magnus L. sent a mail to tell me he had posted the package with the memory.
2013-03-09: as a result of a thread on the freebsd-sparc64 mailing list, a friendly swede contacted me and offered me 4 GB RAM in the form of 8 x Sun 501-5030 (X7051A 512MB) SDRAM modules - for free.
2011-08-21: I tried powering up the machine again with a keyboard and mouse attached. At first it was unwilling (no light in power button), but after I opened it up and re-seated the memory, it came up. After starting to boot from the hard drive, it powered off again. Perhaps the drive is dying. I replaced the drive with my new 73.4 GB drive, and booted again. Of course it can't boot from the drive. From the OBP, this is what it says about the drive (transcribed):
ok probe-scsi LiD HA LUN --- Port WWN --- ----- Disk description ----- 1 1 0 2100000c504fe195 IBM-ESXSST373307FC F B35F ok
and boot cdrom boots the CD.
2011-08-11: I received the ST373307FC hard drive.
2011-08-05: I purchased a hard drive on eBay: IBM ST373307FC 73.4 GB, fibre channel, 10k RPM, for USD 11.99 + USD 9.0 in shipping.

2010-08-22: I booted my Blade 1000 from net like this: boot net -s
. It worked the first time! After boot I did this:
mount /dev/dsk/c1t1d0s0 /a (I fiured out the name from devalias in OBP and a listing of files in /dev/dsk) TERM=vt100 export TERM vi /a/etc/shadow (remove encrypted password for root, and save file) umount /a init 6 (reboot)
2010-08-22: I configured my client with make_template and make_client. JET has its quirks.
2010-08-21: I set up Solaris 10 as a VirtualBox appliance. I installed the JET framework, downloaded Solaris 10 for SPARC, and copied the media.
2010-08-20: Now all I need is the recover the password, and I'm all set. SunOS Release 5.10 Version Generic 64-bit means that it runs Solaris 10.
2010-08-20: I got the package with the memory today. Installed, and booted the machine. Output on console:

It works! Yay!
2010-08-11: package with memory shipped.
2010-08-08: ordered replacement memory from eBay: Sun X7053A 501-5401 1 GB (4 × 256MB SDRAM DIMMs).
2010-07-06: The system won't boot either, seems like there is a problem with the memory (RAM):

ok
2010-07-06: strange, more and more info comes to:

Nice to know.
2010-07-06: with the help of the forum at Nekochan.net, I was able to figure out more things once I got back into the OBP:
ok set-defaults Setting NVRAM parameters to default values. ok
Then
ok .idprom Format/Type: 1 83 Ethernet: 0 3 ba 2 b4 96 Date: 6 20 20 1 Serial: 2 b4 96 Checksum: 3c
So that's it then. More info:

Cool.
2010-06-28: the battery (CR1632) is ok.
2010-06-28: trying several times I got a banner out of it:

Now, what to do with it. This thread says it might be the IDPROM. Not good.
2010-06-28: Somehow I got into OBP. It display this:

I wonder why security-mode is invalid?
2010-06-28: Stripped and cleaned the machine, then put it together again. I have figured out one thing: The machine powers on every time, but the fans do not start every time. Most of the times they stay silent when the machine powers up, and then nothing more happens. When the fans start, the machine beeps and the power light blinks, then turms teady green. After that the hard drive spins up. Nothing more happens.
2010-06-27: well, the machine powers up (both the Sun logo and the green power light shines) and the fans run. No image on screen, and no reaction on the keyboard. However, Stop-N equivalent (from OpenBoot Emergency Procedures) gives me this on the serial (ttya, 9600 baud) console:
Memory Configuration: Segment @ Base: 0 Size: 1024 MB ( 2-Way)
Interesting. Now How to get the screen working. This page claims that the Sun Blade 1000 only will boot with a Sun USB Keyboard attached. Well, mine starts without a keyboard connected. Perhaps it only works now and then? I still haven't managed a full boot.
2010-06-25: I bought the machine. According to the seller, it doesn't power on at all. A challenge.
