Toshiba Satellite Z30-B-10W - FreeBSD - 2016 archive

back to main FreeBSD page for this machine.

2016 archive.

2016-12-09: further testing with FreeBSD 11.0-release (booted from usb stick). from the loader prompt gop get says that mode 0 is in effect. gop list list the following modes:

mode 0: 1920x1080x32
mode 1: 640x480x32
mode 2: 800x600x32
mode 3: 1024x768x32
mode 4: 1280x1024x32

setting a different mode with gop set makes the console work again. gop set 1 turns off the display, you need to type 'boot' blind - but it works. gop set 2,3 and 4 works without issues. Also gop set 2 followed by gop set 0 and finally boot works. wireless - kldload iwm3160fw; kldload iwm makes the wireless interface show up.

2016-12-09: I booted FreeBSD 11.0-release off a usb memory stick. Unfortunately, console output gets corrupted (gfx corruption) after the kernel loads, so the console is unreadable. ctrl-alt-del works, so keyboard input may be ok. It tried a FreeBSD 10.3-rlease usb stick too, but it wouldn't boot that one (it just tried booting Fedora instead).

2016-04-16: ada0p2 - xorg - I tried running "startx" with the intel driver selected in xorg.conf, but it still doesn't recognize Broadwell graphics. Relevant lines from /var/log/Xorg.0.log:

Note that some standard Python modules are provided as separate ports
as they require additional dependencies. They are available as:

bsddb           databases/py-bsddb
gdbm            databases/py-gdbm
sqlite3         databases/py-sqlite3

Message from perl5-5.20.3_11:
The /usr/bin/perl symlink has been removed starting with Perl 5.20.
For shebangs, you should either use:

#!/usr/local/bin/perl

or

#!/usr/bin/env perl

The first one will only work if you have a /usr/local/bin/perl,
the second will work as long as perl is in PATH.

This package installs symlinks to support root certificates discovery by
default for software that uses OpenSSL.

This enables SSL Certificate Verification by client software without manual

If you prefer to do this manually, replace the following symlinks with
either an empty file or your site-local certificate bundle.

  * /etc/ssl/cert.pem

Message from openjdk8-8.77.3:
======================================================================

This OpenJDK implementation requires fdescfs(5) mounted on /dev/fd and
procfs(5) mounted on /proc.

If you have not done it yet, please do the following:

    mount -t fdescfs fdesc /dev/fd
    mount -t procfs proc /proc

To make it permanent, you need the following lines in /etc/fstab:

    fdesc    /dev/fd        fdescfs        rw    0    0
    proc    /proc        procfs        rw    0    0

Some of the standard commands are provided as separate ports for ease
of upgrading:

    devel/ruby-gems: gem - RubyGems package manager
    devel/rubygem-rake:    rake - Ruby Make

And some of the standard libraries are provided as separate ports
since they require extra dependencies:

    databases/ruby-gdbm:    GDBM module

Install them as occasion demands.

Message from xterm-324:
================================================================================
You installed xterm with wide chars support. This introduces some limitations
comparing to the plain single chars version: this version of xterm will use
UTF-8 charset for selection buffers, breaking 8-bit copy/paste support unless
you are using UTF-8 or ISO8859-1 locale. If you want 8-bit charset selections to
work as before, use "eightBitSelectTypes" XTerm resource setting.

For further information refer to the SELECT/PASTE section of xterm(1) manual
page.

Message from openjdk8-jre-8.77.3:
======================================================================

This OpenJDK implementation requires fdescfs(5) mounted on /dev/fd and
procfs(5) mounted on /proc.

If you have not done it yet, please do the following:

    mount -t fdescfs fdesc /dev/fd
    mount -t procfs proc /proc

To make it permanent, you need the following lines in /etc/fstab:

    fdesc    /dev/fd        fdescfs        rw    0    0
    proc    /proc        procfs        rw    0    0

smb:// issues (Gvfs/GIO option):
Network group, machine, and share browsing does not work correctly.

sftp:// (Gvfs/GIO option):
Only sftp access using public key authentication works. To easily
setup public key authentication to "remote_host":

ssh-keygen
cat ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub | ssh remote_host "cat >> .ssh/authorized_keys"

The SSH server on remote_host must allow pub key authentication.

2016-01-22: ada0p2 - testing if java + smartcard support works with buypass smartcard. Using Firefox, I browse to buypass.no and open their "Minibank". Unfortunately I get error code 31503 ("Feilreferanse 31503") which means that the web app (Java?) can't reach / contact the smartcard. Oh well. Let me see if installing the PKCS#11 Java wrapper helps:

This OpenJDK implementation requires fdescfs(5) mounted on /dev/fd and
procfs(5) mounted on /proc.

If you have not done it yet, please do the following:

    mount -t fdescfs fdesc /dev/fd
    mount -t procfs proc /proc

To make it permanent, you need the following lines in /etc/fstab:

    fdesc    /dev/fd        fdescfs        rw    0    0
    proc    /proc        procfs        rw    0    0

Message from pcsc-lite-1.8.15,2:
------------------------------------------------------------------------

PC/SC-Lite has been installed.
You need to install a driver for your smartcard reader e.g.
devel/libccid
security/ifd-slb_rf60

For cardreaders connected to the serial port: After installing the driver,
please update the pcscd configuration file
/usr/local/etc/reader.conf

For USB cardreaders add the following lines to /etc/devd.conf to enable
hotplugging.

attach 100 {
        device-name "ugen[0-9]+";
        action "/usr/local/sbin/pcscd -H";
};

detach 100 {
        device-name "ugen[0-9]+";
        action "/usr/local/sbin/pcscd -H";
};
------------------------------------------------------------------------

ok. start the pcscd daemon:

root@kg-z30b# service pcscd onestatus
pcscd is not running.
root@kg-z30b# service pcscd onestart
Starting pcscd.
root@kg-z30b# service pcscd onestatus
pcscd is running as pid 93053.

Next, plug in a card reader. I run pcsc_scan, the card reader is detected, and it also detects card insertion / removal. It doesn't seem like I have to add things to devd.conf.
