History

2021-07-01: I re-created this page on my self-hosted web server.

2019-09-02: BIOS - 6.50-WIN is still the newest update available.

2018-06-18: BIOS - checked, but 6.50-WIN is the newest update available.

2018-05-03: bios upgrade - added the 6.50 files to the FreeDOS stick, and upgraded again. Now bios is at 6.50, EC still at 1.40.

2018-05-03: bios upgrade - ok, I booted the FreeDOS stick, which has the 6.40 files on it, without any drivers (if I let it boot with jemm386, I got a message that chgbiosf is not available in V86 mode) and ran chgbiosf bio0096t.com,ecbfv140.bin and the bios got updated.

2018-05-03: bios upgrade - next I tried with a 32-bits (x86) WinPE image, still made from win7 WAIK. When I run P0096v650_ECBFv140.exe it extracts, then says "Could not execute the executable file!". This stuff isn't easy. Updated image to include P0096v640_ECBFv140.exe, wich behaves in the same way. However, if I try P0096v650_ECBFv140.exe /extract, it asks if it is ok to extract the files to \P0096v650_ECBFv140 and does so. The directory contains 18 files. Interesting files are

BIO0096T.COM
chgbiosf.exe
ECBFV140.BIN
nchgbios2.exe
nchgbios3.exe
nchgbiosESP.exe
PlatformReader.exe

Unfortunately

chgbiosf - The system cannot find the file X:\P0096v650_ECBFv140\CHGBIOSF.EXE
bio0096t - same message
nchgbios2 - blank line
nchgbios3 - blank line

ok, I googled and found a suggestion

chgbiosf bio0096t.com,ecbfv140.bin - The system cannot find the file X:\P0096v650_ECBFv140\CHGBIOSF.EXE

maybe I need to run this from dos.

2018-05-03: bios upgrade - I tried running P0096v650_ECBFv140.exe from a WinPE image made from win7 WAIK ('ver' says "Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7600]"), and get "The subsystem needed to support the image type is not present.". Crap.

2018-05-03: bios upgrade - I tried running P0096v650_ECBFv140.exe in win7 on another machine, it extracted, but on executing I got a dialog titled "TOSHIBA BIOS Package Ver.4.4.9" and the text "This computer is not supported". Tried P0096v640_ECBFv140.exe, got the same except that it was "TOSHIBA BIOS Package Ver.4.4.6".

2018-03-20: bios - an update is available (from here), labeled 6.50-WIN, date 20/03/2018.

2018-03-06: bios - an update is available (from here), labeled 6.40-WIN, date 02/12/2016.

2015-12-26: bios (UEFI actually) - I cannot find a way to adjust UEFI boot variables from within the Toshiba setup program. So I might need an external boot manager.

2015-12-23: sleeve - I bought a Neoprene sleeve (61185) for NOK 100.- (ok, it was 99,90) from Kjell & Company.

2015-12-20: I booted refind from the usb stick I installed it in back in 2013. Yep, still refind version 0.7.5. It showed me two FreeBSD bootmenu icons. Update: turns out the FreeBSD icons was from some testing I had done on the usb stick.

2015-12-18: I picked up the package with Office 365 Personal (subscription 1 year) at PIB Rimi Trondheimsveien this afternoon.

2015-12-11: storage - ssd - I opened up the machine and replaced the Toshiba SSD with a 250 GB Samsung SSD 850 EVO mSATA. There doesn't appear to be firmware upgrades available for the drive.

2015-12-08: bios - latest bios update available is from 17.04.2015, version 3.20ECKBC1.10-WIN.

2015-12-05: first boot - I boot into setup (F2), BIOS shows that the machine has 16 GB memory. System BIOS version is 3.20, EC version is 1.30.

2015-12-05: plan B - I put the ssd back in, and I will let setup do it's thing.

2015-12-05: storage - ssd - let me make a backup (image) of the ssd before doing anything.

tingo@kg-core1$ sudo dd if=/dev/da0 of=./z30b-ssd-backup-20151205.img bs=16m
dd: /dev/da0: Input/output error
411+0 records in
411+0 records out
6895435776 bytes transferred in 205.370045 secs (33575665 bytes/sec)

hmm, why the error?

tingo@kg-core1$ ll -h z*
-rw-r--r-- 1 root users - 6.4G Dec 5 20:41 z30b-ssd-backup-20151205.img

try again:

tingo@kg-core1$ sudo dd if=/dev/da0 of=./z30b-ssd-backup-20151205.img bs=32m
dd: /dev/da0: Input/output error
147+0 records in
147+0 records out
4932501504 bytes transferred in 154.892523 secs (31844671 bytes/sec)

nope:

tingo@kg-core1$ ll -h z*
-rw-r--r-- 1 root users - 4.6G Dec 5 20:50 z30b-ssd-backup-20151205.img
-rw-r--r-- 1 root users - 6.4G Dec 5 20:41 z30b-ssd-backup-20151205_old.img

so that won't help.

2015-12-05: storage - ssd - it is a Toshiba 128GB THNSNJ128GMCU mSATA. I put it into a mSATA to SATA converter, and connect it to my FreeBSD workstation via a usb-to-SATA adapter.

tingo@kg-core1$ uname -a
FreeBSD kg-core1.kg4.no 9.3-STABLE FreeBSD 9.3-STABLE #1 r287724: Sun Sep 13 00:23:47 CEST 2015 root@kg-core1.kg4.no:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/GENERIC amd64

quite intriguing.

cool. Let me mount the EFI partition (read only of course) and check it out:

2015-12-05: memory - the SODIMM is a Samsung 8 GB 2Rx8 PC3L-12800S-11-13-F3. I want 16 GB in the machine, so I replace it with a 16 GB kit from Crucial: 2 x 8GB DDR3 1600 SODIMM 1.35v (CT102464BF60B.M16FN)

2015-12-05: removing the bottom cover. In addition to the 8 (eight) visible screws, there are 3 (three) hidden screws; one under each back rubber foot, and one under the rubber foot in the middle. After that the cover can be removed.

2015-12-05: unpacking. Contents: 1 x safety instructions and limited warranty manual, 1 x quick start guide (foldout paper), 1 x laptop, 1 x cleaning cloth, 1 x PSU (output 19 V DC, 2.37A) with "mickey mouse" style connector to mains cable.

2015-11-30: I got a shipping notice - the package was shipped.

2015-11-28: this was the Saturday after black Friday, and Elkjøp had 23% discount on all Windows laptops, so I ordered 1 x Toshiba Satellite Z30-B-10W for NOK 6296.15 and free shipping. I got Office 365 Personal (1 year subscription) included, too.

2015-11-24: I got a pickup message from Komplett, my order was ready at the pick-up point.
