work log

2024-03-09: graphics card - I powered down the machine and replaced the MSI R5 230 2GD3H LP with a Sapphire Radeon R7 240 4G DDR3. The new card has VGA, HDMI and DVI-D connectors, I'm still using only the VGA connector.

2023-11-08: speakers - I fetched the package from Elkjøp at PIB Extra Trondheimsveien, and installed a pair of Bose Companion 2 Series III speakers instead of the crappy PC speakers I had from before. The new speakers are bigger, but still fit behind the monitor on the monitor shelf. And they sound a lot better too.

2023-11-04: speakers - From Elkjøp outlet I ordered a set of Bose Companion 2 Series III PC speakers fro NOK 478.- among with a few other things.

2023-07-25: This evening I bought a Logitech MX Keys keyboard (622885) at the local Kjell store for NOK 1190.- (after just about a week of testing I've decided thast the ZON Keyboard4 is not for me. Its just too inconvenient to have to use key combos for PgUp, PgDn, etc.) The Logitech MX Keys has a usb C port (for charging only), an Unifying Receiver, is backlight, full sized, solid / sturdy, and feels good to type on so far.

2023-07-18: I got a pickup message, and fetched the package from Netonnet at my local pickup point, Extra Trondheimsveien. It was the ZON Keyboard4 as expected.

2023-07-17: bios - upgraded to F64 via Q-Flash (bios update file on FAT32 formatted usb stick, select Q-Flash from bios).

2023-07-17: I powered down the machine, opened it up and cleaned away the dust on the insides. Memory - I replaced the four DIMMs with the new ones, the machine now has 128 GB memory. Bios reports 4 x 32 GB DIMMs.

2023-07-17: the package from Proshop arrived (ok, I fetched it from pickup point Extra Trondheimsveien).

2023-07-12: bios - new version available F64 (Jun 12, 2023). Details:

1. Checksum : E683
2. Update AMD AGESA V2 1.2.0.8
3. Optimized performance for 5800X3D
4. Addresses download assistant vulnerabilities reported by Eclypsium Research

2023-07-12: tired of the browsers gobbling up all 64 GB of memory all the time. I ordered 4 x 2813027 Crucial DDR4-3200 C22 SC - 32GB from Proshop at NOK 790.- each, a total of NOK 3160.-

2023-07-11: on impulse I ordered a ZON Keyboard4 from Netonnet 1025209, it was on sale for NOK 599.- with free shipping. This is a TKL (TenKeyLess) keyboard - it doesn't have the numeric keypad on the right. I'm not sure I will adjust to a TKL keyboard, but we'll see.

2022-03-12: I also bought a 0.6m usb 3.0 extension cable (69387) NOK 119.90 and a Plexgear Portable 420 USB 3.0 hub with 4 ports (69515) NOK 249.90. Connected those to the monitor usb hub. usbconfig output after

root@kg-core2:~ # usbconfig
ugen1.1: <0x1022 XHCI root HUB> at usbus1, cfg=0 md=HOST spd=SUPER (5.0Gbps) pwr=SAVE (0mA)
ugen0.1: <0x1022 XHCI root HUB> at usbus0, cfg=0 md=HOST spd=SUPER (5.0Gbps) pwr=SAVE (0mA)

ugen1.5: <GenesysLogic USB3.1 Hub> at usbus1, cfg=0 md=HOST spd=SUPER (5.0Gbps) pwr=SAVE (0mA)

so now I have 4 usb ports on my desk.

2022-03-12: went to Kjell and bought a USB-B 3.0 cable 3 m (68919) NOK 149.90 and connected up the USB 3.0 hub on my SA24A850DW monitor. usbconfig output before

2019-04-13: power on test - the machine powers on, and I get a picture, and it goes into BIOS (there are no storage devices yet). The mouse is connected via a usb-to-ps/2 adapter, and doesn't work correctly in BIOS.

2019-04-13: install - first I take out the graphics card, disconnect all cables, unscrew (6 screws) the old motherboard and take it out, take out the old I/O shield. Then I cleaned the inside of the case a bit (vacuum), mounted the new I/O shield, mounted the new motherboard, it is a bit deeper that the previous one, but is only mounted with 6 screws as there is no hole for a spacer below the seventh hole (closest to front of case). CPU - mounted, ensured alignment with triangle on cpu and socket, mounted the cpu cooler (I had to unscrew clip-on plastic rails first, this cooler has built in screws) and screwed in place. Connected CPU fan. Inserted memory DIMMs (in DDR4_1 and DDR4_2 slots - grey locks / ejector handles). Connected internal cables. The case doesn't have a fan, nor front usb 3.0 connectors so those connectors are unused. The front panel connector is unlabeled, so I try one way and see if it works. Inserted the NE8500GT graphics card and secured it. Connected external connectors.

2019-04-13: I'm planning to re-use the V2 case (an Asus [V2-M3N8200] barebone) which most recently housed the Gigabyte [GA-F2A85XM-HD3] motherboard. I'm also re-using the PSU in the case (it has a Corsair CX430M psu). It also has a graphics card: Asus EN8500GT Silent (PCI-Express), which is a nVidia G86 GeForce 8500 GT, I can re-use that too.

2019-04-12: picked up the package at PIB Extra Trondheimsveien during the day.

2019-04-11: got text messages from Posten about the package on it's way and later arrived.

2019-04-06: from ComputerSalg.no (which really is a Danish store) I ordered:
