History
2017-04-27: I connect a null mode cable to COM1 on the net5501 and to the serial port on my usb-to-serail adapter, then I fire up screen:
[tingo@kg-elitebook Desktop]$ screen /dev/ttyUSB0 19200
then I plug in a power (12 VDC, center positive) to the net5501
and it boots, and the monitor runs at 19200. If I press Ctrl-P before the net5501 boots, I get this:

nice. comBIOS 1.33c is the newest one for the net5501. However, after booting, the serial speed is wrong, so I quit screen and guess - it is 9600 baud:
[tingo@kg-elitebook Desktop]$ screen /dev/ttyUSB0 9600
it runs pfSense

which is quite old, pfSense 2.0 was released in 2011.
2017-04-27: e1 - F25 - I connect up a usb-to-serail adapter to my HP laptop running Fedora, it shows up as ttyUSB0:
