Work log
2021-08-21: I re-created this page on my self-hosted web server.
2013-09-23: I picked up the packages at my local PIB (Post I Butikk) which is RIMI Trondheimsveien today. More info at the Gigabyte F2A85XM-HD3 page.
2013-09-19: I ordered a new mainboard: Gigabyte GA-F2A85XM-HD3 (192561) NOK 549.- and CPU: AMD A6 5400K 3.6GHZ BLACK (180759) NOK 479.- from NetOnNet, total NOK 1028.-. I will use the memory from the v7 machine, that will give me 8 GB RAM. A bit later I got an order confirmation too.
2013-09-19: unfortunately the machine now refuses to power up at all. Time for a new mainboard (and CPU?) perhaps.
2013-09-19: SATA controller - today I stopped by Digital Impuls and bought a quite cheap SATA controller (113076) SDM PCIe SATA II 300 RAID 2P - SiL3132 PCI Express x1 for NOK 295.- If it works in the machine I can just put the hard drive back.
2013-05-27: v7-as-v2 - slice 2 - this morning the machine had rebooted. No reason found in logs or otherwise.
2013-04-11: but the SATA ports doen't work. Devices on SATA ports are not detected, neither in BIOS or in FreeBSD (I booted from a usb-connected hard drive).
SATA or AHCI mode doesn't matter - devices does not get detected. The PATA (IDE) port still works. Maybe it is time to replace this motherboard too.
2013-04-11: I replaced the old PSU ( model GPS-300AB from Delta Electronics) with the new CX430M - that was it, the machine works now.
2013-04-10: I fetched the package from Multicom at my local post office (postkontor Sofienberg).
2013-04-04: I ordered a new PSU from Multicom, a Corsair CX430M for NOK 414.- plus NOK 109.- in shipping.
2013-03-30: today the machine failed - power was on, but no reaction otherwise. Cleaning and testing didn't help much, a couple of times I was able to get a boot screen before it died. Hard to tell if it is the motherboard (visual inspection doesn't indicate that capacitors are bad) or the PSU. Since this is another Asus barebone, and I have replaced the PSU on such a beast before, I'm going with the PSU. in the meantime, I transplanted the gfx card and the hard drive (ad4) over to the v7 machine, it will have to be stand-in until this machine can be repaired or replaced.
2012-04-06: The newest BIOS is still version 0604.
2009-10-31: upgraded BIOS from version 0402 to version 0604.
2009-01-02: I added another hard drive, for os testing. It is a Seagate 80 GB PATA drive.
2009-01-02: added a graphics card: Asus EN8500GT Silent (PCI-Express). pciconf -lv and lspci output:
root@kg-v2# pciconf -lv | grep -B 4 VGA vgapci0@pci0:2:0:0: class=0x030000 card=0x824e1043 chip=0x042110de rev=0xa1 hdr=0x00 vendor = 'Nvidia Corp' device = 'G86 GeForce 8500 GT' class = display subclass = VGA root@kg-v2# lspci -s 02:00.0 02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GeForce 8500 GT (rev a1)
2008-12-24: upgraded the bios from version 0303 to version 0402.
2008-12-24: the machine only have one ps/2 port (can be used for keyboard or mose), so I connect the keyboard cable from the kvm switch there. I use a usb-to-ps2 adapter for the mouse, which shows up like this in /var/log/messages:
ums0: <CHESEN PS2 to USB Converter, class 0/0, rev 1.10/0.10, addr 2> on uhub0 ums0: 5 buttons and Z dir.
This means that the mouse is detected as usb, not ps/2. Still, it works.
2008-12-24: I got the machine.
