Asus M5A78L / USB3 - FreeBSD - 2014 archive

back to main FreeBSD page for this machine.

2014 archive.

2014-12-26: ada0p2 - ports - to get ffmpegthumbnailer 2.0.9 to compile, I had to add the patch from Bug 195600, Thunderbird is now 31.3.0,

2014-12-25: ada0p2 - ports - I updated a lot of ports, including perl. There were quite a few entries in /usr/ports/UPDATING this time. abcde is now 2.6, Firefox 34.0.5,1 and

2014-12-25: ada0p2 - ports - update ports tree via portsnap fetch; portsnap update. Then disable HAL again:

root@kg-core1# ls -ld /usr/ports/sysutils/hal*
drwxr-xr-x 3 root wheel 512 Oct 31 20:17 /usr/ports/sysutils/hal-info
drwxr-xr-x 3 root wheel 512 Nov 21 21:47 /usr/ports/sysutils/hal_

hmm, looks like it isn't there. Perhaps it wasn't updated.

2014-12-13: ada0p2 - ports - I installed audio/abcde 2.5.4_ in order to convert audio CDs. Next I copied the configuration file from the RELENG_8 home directory:

tingo@kg-core1$ cp -pv /mnt/home/tingo/.abcde.conf ~/
/mnt/home/tingo/.abcde.conf -> /home/tingo/.abcde.conf

Since my usb connected DVD writer showed up as /dev/cd1 I use this to get the info:

tingo@kg-core1$ abcde -d /dev/cd1 -a cddb

and this for ripping:

tingo@kg-core1$ abcde -d /dev/cd1 -N

that is all.

In order to automatically load the fuse module on startup, you need to:

  • Add fusefs_enable="YES" to your /etc/rc.conf.
  • Run "/usr/local/etc/rc.d/fusefs start" (for the first time).

Set "sysctl vfs.usermount=1" if you want to be able to mount fuse devices as an ordinary user.

Now fuse filesystems (sysutils/fusefs-*) can be mounted at startup from /etc/fstab with the "late" parameter. This requires a symlink in /usr/sbin named "mount_", which is not created by all the fusefs ports.

Note that the rc.d script will unmount all fuse filesystems when called with "stop" (in reverse order in case of nested mounts), so it can unload the kernel module.

Written by: Martin Blapp mbr@freebsd.org and Maho Nakata maho@FreeBSD.org

Apache OpenOffice will soon been installed in /usr/local/openoffice-4.1.1

1. User installation

Just type "openoffice-4.1.1" after you have successfully installed the package. If there is no installed OO.org dir in your homedir, the setup installs ".openoffice4" folder.

2. Starting OO.org

There are some wrappers installed for faster startup. Add "/usr/local/bin/" to your PATH and you will be able to use them.

/usr/local/bin/openoffice-4.1.1 /usr/local/bin/openoffice-4.1.1-sbase /usr/local/bin/openoffice-4.1.1-scalc /usr/local/bin/openoffice-4.1.1-sdraw /usr/local/bin/openoffice-4.1.1-setofficelang /usr/local/bin/openoffice-4.1.1-smath /usr/local/bin/openoffice-4.1.1-simpress /usr/local/bin/openoffice-4.1.1-spadmin /usr/local/bin/openoffice-4.1.1-swriter

OO.org does need $LANG to be set to a suitable value.

3. If you run into problems

If you somehow run into problems, please remove the already installed ".openoffice4" dir in your homedir. Redo the user installation and the problems should go away.

Reported the failure on freebsd-ports, and from knowledgeable people there got the answer: the default compiler on FreeBSD 8.4-stable is too old to compile this port properly. If I add either USE_GCC= yes or USES= compiler:c11 the the Makefile, it compiles. I went with the latter fix.
