History / work log
2016-01-29: after a forced shutdown (via powerbutton) the clocks are:
tingo@kg-oven1:~$ sudo DISPLAY=:0.0 aticonfig --adapter=all --odgc [sudo] password for tingo: Adapter 0 - AMD Radeon HD 7480D Core (MHz) Memory (MHz) Current Clocks : 300 667 Current Peak : 720 667 Configurable Peak Range : [300-720] [667-667] GPU load : 0% Adapter 1 - AMD Radeon HD 7900 Series Core (MHz) Memory (MHz) Current Clocks : 950 1350 Current Peak : 950 1350 Configurable Peak Range : [300-1200] [150-1575] GPU load : 99% Adapter 2 - AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series Core (MHz) Memory (MHz) Current Clocks : 950 1350 Current Peak : 950 1350 Configurable Peak Range : [300-1400] [150-1450] GPU load : 99%
it doesn't look like cgminer ever gets it right. Fixing it in cgminer, and now: the machine died. Oh well.
2016-01-29: after reboot, clocks are:
tingo@kg-oven1:~$ sudo DISPLAY=:0.0 aticonfig --adapter=all --odgc Adapter 0 - AMD Radeon HD 7480D Core (MHz) Memory (MHz) Current Clocks : 300 667 Current Peak : 720 667 Configurable Peak Range : [300-720] [667-667] GPU load : 0% Adapter 1 - AMD Radeon HD 7900 Series Core (MHz) Memory (MHz) Current Clocks : 300 150 Current Peak : 950 1400 Configurable Peak Range : [300-1200] [150-1575] GPU load : 0% Adapter 2 - AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series Core (MHz) Memory (MHz) Current Clocks : 300 150 Current Peak : 1000 1200 Configurable Peak Range : [300-1400] [150-1450] GPU load : 0%
which is very wrong. It doesn't look like chgminer will let me change anything either, it just complains about the GPUs. I quit cgminer, then try something from the shell:
tingo@kg-oven1:~$ sudo DISPLAY=:0.0 aticonfig --adapter=1 --odsc=1150,1400 Overdrive(TM) disclaimer: Overclocking to high/maximum clock value cannot be guaranteed to work depending on the actual ASIC. Hard hangs, corruption, or application failures are valid results that may be observed if a higher clock value is set than the ASIC can handle. Once you've read and understood this disclaimer please run "amdconfig --od-enable" to proceed
ok, try
tingo@kg-oven1:~$ sudo DISPLAY=:0.0 aticonfig -od-enable Using d-enable Saving back-up to d-enable.fglrx-0
and retry, didn't help. Now do as he program says:
tingo@kg-oven1:~$ sudo amdconfig --od-enable AMD Overdrive(TM) enabled
cool. Retry - didn't help. How about this:
tingo@kg-oven1:~$ sudo DISPLAY=:0.0 amdconfig --od-enable AMD Overdrive(TM) enabled
then this
tingo@kg-oven1:~$ sudo DISPLAY=:0.0 aticonfig --adapter=1 --odsc=1150,1400 Adapter 1 - AMD Radeon HD 7900 Series New Core Peak : 1150 New Memory Peak : 1400
verify:
tingo@kg-oven1:~$ sudo DISPLAY=:0.0 aticonfig --adapter=1 --odgc Adapter 1 - AMD Radeon HD 7900 Series Core (MHz) Memory (MHz) Current Clocks : 300 150 Current Peak : 1150 1400 Configurable Peak Range : [300-1200] [150-1575] GPU load : 0%
ok. Adapter 2:
tingo@kg-oven1:~$ sudo DISPLAY=:0.0 aticonfig --adapter=2 --odgc Adapter 2 - AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series Core (MHz) Memory (MHz) Current Clocks : 300 150 Current Peak : 1000 1200 Configurable Peak Range : [300-1400] [150-1450] GPU load : 0% tingo@kg-oven1:~$ sudo DISPLAY=:0.0 aticonfig --adapter=2 --odsc=950,1350 Adapter 2 - AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series New Core Peak : 950 New Memory Peak : 1350 tingo@kg-oven1:~$ sudo DISPLAY=:0.0 aticonfig --adapter=2 --odgc Adapter 2 - AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series Core (MHz) Memory (MHz) Current Clocks : 300 150 Current Peak : 950 1350 Configurable Peak Range : [300-1400] [150-1450] GPU load : 0%
cool. Now try to restart cgminer, nah it hangs. Need to restart the machine again. Persist clocks first:
tingo@kg-oven1:~$ sudo DISPLAY=:0.0 aticonfig --adapter=1 --odcc Clocks persisted for Adapter 1 - AMD Radeon HD 7900 Series tingo@kg-oven1:~$ sudo DISPLAY=:0.0 aticonfig --adapter=2 --odcc Clocks persisted for Adapter 2 - AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series
ok.
2016-01-29: got another ASIC hang today:
Jan 29 13:52:22 kg-oven1 kernel: [748862.376566] <6>[fglrx] ASIC hang happened
reboot the machine.
2016-01-20: let's see if commit clocks will help. Adapter 1:
tingo@kg-oven1:~$ sudo DISPLAY=:0.0 aticonfig --adapter=1 --odcc Clocks persisted for Adapter 1 - AMD Radeon HD 7900 Series
and Adapter 2:
tingo@kg-oven1:~$ sudo DISPLAY=:0.0 aticonfig --adapter=2 --odcc Clocks persisted for Adapter 2 - AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series
ok.
2016-01-20: after restart, settings for the GPUs was wrong again:
tingo@kg-oven1:~$ sudo DISPLAY=:0.0 aticonfig --adapter=all --odgc Adapter 0 - AMD Radeon HD 7480D Core (MHz) Memory (MHz) Current Clocks : 300 667 Current Peak : 720 667 Configurable Peak Range : [300-720] [667-667] GPU load : 0% Adapter 1 - AMD Radeon HD 7900 Series Core (MHz) Memory (MHz) Current Clocks : 950 1400 Current Peak : 950 1400 Configurable Peak Range : [300-1200] [150-1575] GPU load : 99% Adapter 2 - AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series Core (MHz) Memory (MHz) Current Clocks : 1000 1200 Current Peak : 1000 1200 Configurable Peak Range : [300-1400] [150-1450] GPU load : 99%
I adjusted settings manually in cgminer, now they are:
tingo@kg-oven1:~$ sudo DISPLAY=:0.0 aticonfig --adapter=all --odgc Adapter 0 - AMD Radeon HD 7480D Core (MHz) Memory (MHz) Current Clocks : 300 667 Current Peak : 720 667 Configurable Peak Range : [300-720] [667-667] GPU load : 0% Adapter 1 - AMD Radeon HD 7900 Series Core (MHz) Memory (MHz) Current Clocks : 1150 1400 Current Peak : 1150 1400 Configurable Peak Range : [300-1200] [150-1575] GPU load : 99% Adapter 2 - AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series Core (MHz) Memory (MHz) Current Clocks : 950 1350 Current Peak : 950 1350 Configurable Peak Range : [300-1400] [150-1450] GPU load : 99%
we'll see how long it lasts.

Since cgminer wasn't responding, I rebooted the machine.
2016-01-07: well, cgminer hung with yesterday's settings too. It just took a day. Changing setting for gpu2 - E 950 M 1350 gives me about 385 kH/s, fan is 45%. Settings:
tingo@kg-oven1:~$ sudo DISPLAY=:0.0 aticonfig --adapter=all --odgc Adapter 0 - AMD Radeon HD 7480D Core (MHz) Memory (MHz) Current Clocks : 300 667 Current Peak : 720 667 Configurable Peak Range : [300-720] [667-667] GPU load : 0% Adapter 1 - AMD Radeon HD 7900 Series Core (MHz) Memory (MHz) Current Clocks : 1150 1400 Current Peak : 1150 1400 Configurable Peak Range : [300-1200] [150-1575] GPU load : 99% Adapter 2 - AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series Core (MHz) Memory (MHz) Current Clocks : 950 1350 Current Peak : 950 1350 Configurable Peak Range : [300-1400] [150-1450] GPU load : 99%

2016-01-06: tuning - gpu1 (R9 280) - engine autotune gives EC 1075, MC 1500, fan speed 85% (quite audible) and about 645 kH/s. EC 1150 MC 1440 gives fans speed 85% and about 648 kH/s.

2014-04-12: In the end, I had to force the machine off, via power switch (hold in for more than 8 seconds). Afterwards, the machine will not boot. It powers on, everything looks ok, but it doesn't boot. I took out the usb memstick and put it into my laptop, it fscked but turned out ok. There isn't any BIOS output to the screen either. Can I have killed the motherboard already?
2014-04-12: today the machine was very unresponsive, it was not possible to ssh into it:
tingo@kg-core1$ ssh o1 ssh_exchange_identification: Connection closed by remote host
cgminer's interface was slow, and from the shell I got things like:
tingo@kg-oven1:~$ free -m -bash: fork: Cannot allocate memory tingo@kg-oven1:~$ date date: error while loading shared libraries: cannot create cache for search path: Cannot allocate memory tingo@kg-oven1:~$ uptime -bash: fork: Cannot allocate memory tingo@kg-oven1:~$ df -h -bash: fork: Cannot allocate memory tingo@kg-oven1:~$ swapon -s -bash: /sbin/swapon: Cannot allocate memory
and it takes minutes between each command. We will see if I can manage a graceful shutdown.
2014-03-13: later I rebooted the machine to see if swap usage had any impact on hash rate. It might have, but the difference is small. cgminer now, after reboot:

2014-02-09: and with three cfgx cards mining, the fan on the PSU runs.
2014-02-09: after running cgminer for about 15 minutes, the temps looks like this:
tingo@kg-oven1:~$ sudo DISPLAY=:0.0 aticonfig --adapter=all --odgt Adapter 0 - AMD Radeon HD 7480D Sensor 0: Temperature - 20.00 C Adapter 1 - AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series Sensor 0: Temperature - 78.00 C Adapter 2 - AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series Sensor 0: Temperature - 72.00 C Adapter 3 - AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series Sensor 0: Temperature - 73.00 C
2014-02-09: after installing the third gfx adapter, I re-ran initial gfx configuration:
tingo@kg-oven1:~$ sudo aticonfig --adapter=all --initial Found fglrx primary device section Found fglrx primary device section Using /etc/X11/xorg.conf Saving back-up to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.fglrx-0
the run the temp thing to see if all adapters are detected:
tingo@kg-oven1:~$ sudo DISPLAY=:0.0 aticonfig --adapter=all --odgt Adapter 0 - AMD Radeon HD 7480D Sensor 0: Temperature - 4294962.00 C Adapter 1 - AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series Sensor 0: Temperature - 26.00 C ERROR - Get temperature failed for Adapter 2 - AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series
Hmm, not good. Ok, after testing with one and one card, and re-running gfx configuration, I've figured it out: I need to remove /etc/X11/xorg.conf before running the gfx configuration. Now it looks like this:
tingo@kg-oven1:~$ sudo DISPLAY=:0.0 aticonfig --adapter=all --odgt Adapter 0 - AMD Radeon HD 7480D Sensor 0: Temperature - 8.00 C Adapter 1 - AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series Sensor 0: Temperature - 56.00 C Adapter 2 - AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series Sensor 0: Temperature - 49.00 C Adapter 3 - AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series Sensor 0: Temperature - 29.00 C
and clocks:
tingo@kg-oven1:~$ sudo DISPLAY=:0.0 aticonfig --adapter=all --odgc Adapter 0 - AMD Radeon HD 7480D Core (MHz) Memory (MHz) Current Clocks : 300 667 Current Peak : 720 667 Configurable Peak Range : [300-720] [667-667] GPU load : 0% Adapter 1 - AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series Core (MHz) Memory (MHz) Current Clocks : 950 1250 Current Peak : 950 1250 Configurable Peak Range : [300-1400] [150-1450] GPU load : 99% Adapter 2 - AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series Core (MHz) Memory (MHz) Current Clocks : 950 1250 Current Peak : 950 1250 Configurable Peak Range : [300-1400] [150-1450] GPU load : 99% Adapter 3 - AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series Core (MHz) Memory (MHz) Current Clocks : 300 150 Current Peak : 950 1250 Configurable Peak Range : [300-1400] [150-1450] GPU load : 0%

I wonder if those HW errors means I should reduce clocks somewhat? Also, the machine is far from idle:
tingo@kg-oven1:~$ uptime 17:45:58 up 12:13, 5 users, load average: 4,64, 4,53, 4,51
Why is that? Anyway, parameters used are:

(I had manually adjusted gpu engine to 950, and gpu clock to 1250). All for now.

2013-12-27: after creating startup scripts and setting up for P2pool, it looks like I'm getting around 330 kh/s per card. Changing Engine to 1100 MHz and Memory to 1400 MHz gets me around 340 kh/s per card. But after a while the gpu cards stopped - not good. Running with defaults for now.
2013-12-26: test if cgminer detects all GPUs:

all there. Generate initial configuration:
tingo@kg-oven1:~$ sudo aticonfig --adapter=all --initial Uninitialised file found, configuring. Using /etc/X11/xorg.conf Saving back-up to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.original-0
Reboot, then check adapters (get temperature):
tingo@kg-oven1:~$ sudo aticonfig --adapter=all --odgt ERROR - X needs to be running to perform AMD Overdrive(TM) commands
Ok, let me login n the console first:
tingo@kg-oven1:~$ sudo DISPLAY=:0.0 aticonfig --adapter=all --odgt Adapter 0 - AMD Radeon HD 7480D Sensor 0: Temperature - 4294963.00 C Adapter 1 - AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series Sensor 0: Temperature - 30.00 C Adapter 2 - AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series Sensor 0: Temperature - 25.00 C
at least the DISPLAY variable is needed. The HD 7480D is the one built into the APU. Get clocks:
tingo@kg-oven1:~$ sudo DISPLAY=:0.0 aticonfig --adapter=all --odgc Adapter 0 - AMD Radeon HD 7480D Core (MHz) Memory (MHz) Current Clocks : 300 667 Current Peak : 720 667 Configurable Peak Range : [300-720] [667-667] GPU load : 0% Adapter 1 - AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series Core (MHz) Memory (MHz) Current Clocks : 300 150 Current Peak : 1000 1200 Configurable Peak Range : [300-1400] [150-1450] GPU load : 0% Adapter 2 - AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series Core (MHz) Memory (MHz) Current Clocks : 300 150 Current Peak : 1000 1200 Configurable Peak Range : [300-1400] [150-1450] GPU load : 0%
