History

2024-01-06: I replaced the old ada5 with a new drive. As expected, the new drive didn't show up in camcontrol after replacement, I had to reboot the machine first. New ada5 details:

tingo@kg-f6$ sudo smartctl -i /dev/ada5
smartctl 6.5 2016-05-07 r4318 [FreeBSD 11.1-STABLE amd64] (local build)

2023-12-29: I replaced the old PSU with the new one. I also replaced ada5 with the old one, we shall see if it works or not (I did reseat most of the sata cables).

2023-12-29: luck - the local Kjell had a Corsair CV550 (64781) for NOK 729.- it will have to do.

2023-12-29: tried a different PSU; yes now it works. So I need to order a new PSU.

2023-12-29: I tried the CMOS clear jumper (it is obscured by the gfx card, so I had to tak out that too), but no dice.

2023-12-29: connecting the machine with a keyboard and a montor (remember that the machine has a dedicated gfx card, using HDMI output on that works). Powering up, it stop on the ASRock BIOS screen, if I press Num Lock or Caps Lock on the keyboard, the lights turn on and off as they should. If I press on of the other keys: F2 / DEL to enter bios, F6 for Instant Flash, F11 for Boot Menu, nothing happens and then the keyboard is frozen. If I press Tab, I get the AMI sign on message and BIOS Date, nothing else.

2023-12-29: I opened up the case and vacuumed it. Not to dirty, except for the front fan, which was really dusty.

2023-12-28: reboot - the machine doesn't come up again, not even after a poweroff. Perhaps the usb stick is done for.

2023-12-28: the new drives are labeled STKM4000400, 4TB, Regulatory Model: SRD0NF1, PN: 3EEAP4-570. Unshucked one, inside is a ST4000LM024 drive, serial number WTL0F4XX. Replaced the drive physically, but it doesn't show up. Perhaps it is the cable. Try a reboot, see if that helps.

2023-12-28: got a pick-up message (text) and picked up the package at Extra Trondheimsveien in the evening.

2023-12-25: I don't have any replacment 4TB 2.5 inch drives in the house, so I ordered 2 x Seagate Expansion Portable 4TB HDD (model no: STKM4000400) from NetOnNet, the cost was NOK 1349.- each. That gave me free shipping, so total cost was NOK 2698.- We shall see if they work, or if Segate has changed the internals.

2023-03-16: physical placement of the drives are like this (ada0 top left)

ada0 ada4
ada1 ada6
ada2 ada5
ada3 ada7

powered on the machine after having re-inserted all drives.

2023-03-16: powered down the machine and took out the drives one by one to verify physical placement.

2022-09-17: drive - ada0 - I physically replaced it (it is the upper left slot seen from the front).

2022-09-05: I got a pickup message (mail and text), and picked up the package on my way home from PIB Extra Trondheimsveien.

2022-09-02: I got tracking info for the package from Multicom. A bit slow, they say "ships within 6 - 10 workdays", this is now 17 workdays.

2022-08-14: drive ada0 has died. I must buy a replacement. I ordered 2 x ST4000LM024 for NOK 1201.- each, plus shipping NOK 79.- a total of NOK 2481.- from Multicom.

2021-07-06: I re-created this page on my self-hosted web server.

2020-10-25: the machine wasn't responding over the network, so I powered off and on again using the power button.

2018-07-14: I replaced ada0 physically. From /var/log/messages

ok.

2018-07-13: Since ada0 is failing / failed, I bought a new drive from Digital Impuls (139746) Seagate Backup Plus Portable 4TB Sort for NOK 1190.- The box said STDR4000200, regulatory model: SRD00F1, P/N: 1K9ADA-570. Inside, it is a ST4000LM024 drive, PN: 2AN17V-566, serial no: WCK2RMNP.

2017-09-12: front bay - the SST-FS208B has a 20-pin (22 actually) which might carry fan, temperature and HDD signals. However, it is not documented how to use it. It could be anything from a way to get LED signals out, to a temperature and a fan speed.

2017-09-09: disks - just booting the machine to check that all (eight) disk drives I have added are recognized. They all show up - good.

2017-08-29: uefi - FM2A88M Pro3+ P2.60. I ran Tool, UEFI Update Utility, Internet flash and got "Your firmware version is up to date." - good.

2017-08-29: first boot - everything appears to work.

2017-08-29: video / graphics - the CPU doesn't have a built-in GPU, so I installed an old EVGA GeForce 210 card that I had laying around (unused).

2017-08-29: cable management - I just tied down cables as best as I could so their out of the way.

2017-08-29: hard drive bay - I installed the FS208B into the case, this things fits nicely into the two 5.25 inch drive bays and slides in place with a bit of elbow grease. The hole in the front panel is tight, but it works. The screws to fasten 5.25 inch devices (or the drive bay in this case) are too long. For now I have fastened four of then loosely on the left side (seen from the front). If I tight the screws, I can't take drives in or out of the drive bays. I connected up the two SATA power cables (very tight) and eight SATA cables for the drives.

2017-08-29: power supply - I installed the power supply into the case. One of the screws that came with the case didn't take - no problem, I just used one of the screws that came with the PSU instead. Connected up PSU cable to the motherboard.

2017-08-29: case - I installed the motherboard into the case, and secured it with six screws. I connected the case connectors (front panel, HDaudio, usb 2 & 3) and front chassis fan.

2017-08-29: motherboard - first I instaled the CPU (CPU serial no: 9GP5159G60192), next the CPU cooler (PIB so it had thermal paste preapplied) and I connected the CPU fan to its connector. Then I installed memory, the UDIMMs was installed in A2 and B2 slots (the black ones) as recommended by the manual.

2017-08-29: case - first I installed the I/O panel shield in the case, next six standoffs for the motherboard.

2017-08-28: the packages (case in a separate package) from Proshop arrived, and I fetched them from PIB Extra Trondheimsveien.

2017-08-26: the eBay package arrived, I fetched it from PIB Extra Trondheimsveien, and paid NOK 243. in value added tax (MVA).

2017-08-18: from eBay (a seller in Germany) I ordered a hard drive bay: Silverstone SST-FS208B, price was EUR 118.72 (EUR 14.90 was shipping, in total NOK 1158.23).

2017-08-18: from Proshop I ordered case: Fractal Design Core 1100 microATX NOK 658.- motherboard: ASRock FM2A88M Pro3+ microATX NOK 379.- cpu: AMD Athlon II X4 845 @ 3.5 GHz NOK 461.- memory: Crucial DDR3L-1600 DC 32 GB (Kit 2 x 16 GB) NOK 3246.- in total NOK 4744.-

2016-10-21: got a pick-up message and fetched the package from Komplett at PIB Extra Trondsheimsveien in the afternoon.

2016-10-20: at a sale on Komplett, I bought 8 x Seagate Backup Plus Portable 4TB, the price was NOK 1249.- each. The total was NOK 9992.-
