Work log
2011-03-11: I ran Software Update - no changes to the operating system.
2011-03-11: CD-burning test: I downloaded the FreeBSD-8.2-RELEASE-powerpc-disc1.iso and used Disk Utility to burn it onto a CD-ROM.
2011-03-11: I had trouble installing an upgraded version of Firefox, when I dragged the Firefox icon over the Applications icon,
I got the usual "existing...rerplace?" dialog question, which I answered yes to.
But then another dialog came up which said I didn't have sufficient rights for that
("I'm sorry Dave - you can't do that because you have insufficient rights on some of the objects").
Switched to Terminal and did a ls -l /Applications
, which showed that the owner of /Applications/Firefox.app
was a numeric user-id.
Aha - the previous owner had deleted his user, so now all programs installed by that user are without an owner. Well, a bit of googling,
and then sudo chown -R myuser /Applications/Firefox.app
fixed that; and I could happily drag-install the newest version of Firefox. Nice!
2011-03-11: the machine came with Mac OS X 10.5.8 (9L31a) - Norwegian, kernel version Darwin 9.8.0 installed.
