ISP - Get

Back to the ISP page.

Service: Bredband M: 120 Mbps down, 15 Mbps up. was: 75 Mbps down, 15 Mbps up (was: 30 Mbps down, 5 Mbps up). The old one was: Bredband M 20 (20 Mbps down, 2 Mbps up) backup - Mobilt S mobile broadband with 3G modem (usb)

Get was my internet service provider from 2012 through (most of) 2018, the testing period showed that their service was up to my requirements and demands.

2016-03-04: at 07:51 got a text message from Get: "det er for tiden problemer med tjenestene i ditt område og vi jobber med å rette feilen.". There was also a link to driftsmeldinger, but when I checked it, there wasn't a relevant message there. At 08:21 a new text message from Get "Feilen i ditt område er rettet og alle tjenester skal fungere som normalt. Hvis du ikke kommer på nett kan du forsøke å restarte modemet ditt.".

2016-01-28: today I got a newsletter (via email) from Get. Main points: my service is now called Bredband M75. download speed 75 Mbps (up from 50 Mbps), upload speed 15 Mbps (up from 5 Mbps). From March 1st, they will also increase the price of the service with NOK 20. each month.

2016-01-20: I restarted the modem (power off / on). after that speedtests show 65 - 70 Mbps down, and about 13 - 14 Mbps up. An improvement.

2016-01-20: the internal interface on the firewall was at 100 Mbps speed instead of 1 Gbps - I fixed that. As expected this didn't change anything for the speedtest.

2016-01-20: checking on "my page" at Get, it says that I have Bredband M 75 / 15. Previously this was 50 / 5. Maybe I need to restart the modem. Later in the evening: Speedtest (beta.speedtest.net) and various other speedtests agree: I get about 50 Mbps down and 5 Mbps up.

2015-03-09: at 15:16, a new message: "Kjære kunde. Vi har rettet feilen i ditt område, og alle tjenester skal nå fungere som normalt.". Good.

2015-03-09: at 14:23, received a text message: "Vi har dessverre problemer med tjenestene i ditt område. Våre teknikere jobber med å rette feilen.". They don't specify which services are affected, there is no information about this on their web (yet), only about planned work and older problems (fixed). A quick test shows that I can reach my blog, so internet connectivity seems to be up at least.

just a short dip.

2014-10-15: mail - testing with Sylpheed this evening. Via py-spambayes (as pop3 proxy) I have the same problems as yesterday - large mails eventually times out. Connecting directly to my ISP's mail server I get a timeout. From Sylpheeds log:

* Connecting to POP3 server: mail.getmail.no...
[20:27:55] POP3< +OK POP3 ready
[20:27:55] POP3> USER torfinn.ingolfsen

** LibSylph-WARNING: sock_read: received EOF

** LibSylph-WARNING: [20:27:55] Connection closed by the remote host.

** Connection closed by the remote host.

Not sure if this is a temporary problem or what. OK, looks like it is a problem with the server, sometimes I get farther:

[20:30:35] POP3> RETR 115
[20:30:35] POP3< +OK message follows
[20:30:35] POP3> RETR 116
[20:30:35] POP3< +OK message follows
** LibSylph-WARNING: sock_read: received EOF

** LibSylph-WARNING: [20:30:36] Connection closed by the remote host.

** Connection closed by the remote host.

Not good. OK further testing shows that I get large mails without problem via a direct connection to the my IPS's mail server (via POP3). So the problem is definitely with py-spambayes.

2014-10-14: mail - trouble downloading large mails (large >= ~2 MB). Testing tonight (with alternate mail client claws-mail) shows that a direct connection to ISP's pop3 server works, but a connection via my spam filtering proxy (mail/py-spambayes) doesn't work. Now I need to verify (with Sylpheed + py-spambayes that my findings are correct, and figure out how to fix py-spambayes. See also bug 822.

2014-05-07: (not really related to my ISP). I have been using the free service from DynDNS.org / Dyn.com for a long time, and have been a satisfied customer. Today their free service ended (very sad to see it go), so I upgraded to Remote Access (aka DynDNS Pro) for USD 25. a year. And got a rebate too, so the price was USD 18.75. The paid service has more hostnames available (currently 32), which is nice.

2014-04-27: ISP service has been unstable today, the internet interface has bounced (down and up again) from 12:48 until 15:50 today. ISP's messages show:

27 apr 2014 kl. 13:00 Bredbånd Informasjon Enkelte kunder i dette området kan oppleve perioder med ustabilitet bredbånd, telefoni og filmleie.

Vi jobber med å rette feilen og beklager de ulemper feilen kan medføre.
    Rettet

that is all.

2014-04-26: according to my firewall log, the internet interface went down and up again (once) today.

2014-02-25: I got a letter (on paper) from Get today, announcing changes in broadband: from 1.4.2014 the speed (download) will change to 50 Mbps (today 30 Mbps) and the monthly price will be NOK 499.- (today NOK 479.). This change is also listed on the Get M 30 page. No changes in upload speed (today 5 Mbps).

2014-02-20: more "slow internet access" problems this evening / night. And now the status page for my ISP claims that the error from "11 feb 2014" is corrected:

11 feb 2014 kl. 23:30 Bredbånd, Telefoni Enkelte kunder i dette området kan oppleve redusert kapasitet tjenesten bredbånd i perioder med stor pågang.

Dette kan oppleves som tregere hastighet.

2014-02-18: tonight the "slow internet access" problems are back. And the ISP message from "11 feb 2014" is still active...

2014-02-13: the last few days (afternoons / evenings actually) my Internet access has been ... slow. From the ISP's messages page:

Perhaps the Olympics is too much for Get?

2013-04-03: at approximately 20:18, internet disappeared again. Upon checking, a technician from Get was working, replacing the old signal amplifier with a new one. He said it would be about 30 mins - one hour and he would be finished. At 21:30, the connection was back up again.

2013-04-03: The internet connection (and TV too) has been down between 00:18 and 19:25 (approximately), because the circuit breaker had tripped. I reset it, and now we are back.

2013-01-11: this evening, at about 17:45 my internet connection started bouncing down and up again. It did so for the better part of the evening, getting back to normal at 22:07. My ISP (Get) had an outage message on its web pages, but it is gone now. In fact, all messages about outages for my area is missing now. Not good. Ok, the messages are back, here is the message:

11.01.2013

2013-01-02: this morning my internet connection was slow as molasses. No clue (everything looked ok), so I just restarted natd on my firewall. After about ten minutes everything was back to normal. Hard to tell if it was related to natd or not.

2012-12-10: message from ISP (in Norwegian): "Grunnet oppgradering i en av våre sentraler vil Get bredbånd og filmleie være utilgjengelig for deg natt til tirsdag 11.12-2012 mellom kl 01:00 og kl 06:00. Vi beklager eventuelle ulemper dette kan medføre."

2012-11-09: message from ISP (in Norwegian): "Kjære kunde. Vi utfører i perioden fra 05.11-12 til 16.11-12 proaktiv innjustering av vårt nett i ditt område. Dette vil kunne medføre korte brudd i tjenestene fra Get i tidsrommet 07-16 i denne perioden. Vi beklager de ulemper dette måtte medføre."

2012-09-29: some things logged in the firewall logs are more funny than others. Like this (from /var/log/messages):

Sep 29 12:53:08 kg-omni1 dhclient[49160]: option option-101 (101) larger than buffer.
Sep 29 12:53:08 kg-omni1 dhclient[49160]: rejecting bogus offer.
Sep 29 15:43:40 kg-omni1 dhclient[49160]: option streettalk-directory-assistance-server (101) larger than buffer.
Sep 29 15:43:40 kg-omni1 dhclient[49160]: rejecting bogus offer.

A StreetTalk directory assistance server? Really? (for those who don't know what StreetTalk is, check out Banyan VINES). I ran a Banyan VINES network once, but it is more than twenty years ago.

2012-08-08: this evening, the service (all service) from Get is down:

08.08.2012 kl. 19:15 Analog-TV, Digital-TV, Filmleie, Bredbånd, Telefoni Enkelte kunder i dette området kan for tiden oppleve utfall av alle tjenester fra Get. Berørte addresser er: Thorvald Meyers Gate 85 G-K Våre teknikere jobber med å rette feilen. Get beklager de ulemper dette vil kunne medføre for våre kunder.

So, currently no broadband, no TV. Let's see how long it takes before they're up again.

2012-07-12: the patch to dhclient has improved things a lot. From /var/log/messages on my firewall:

Jul 12 01:25:31 kg-omni1 dhclient[19046]: Link xl0 is down, dhclient exiting
Jul 12 01:25:31 kg-omni1 kernel: xl0: link state changed to DOWN
Jul 12 01:25:31 kg-omni1 dhclient[19033]: connection closed
Jul 12 01:25:31 kg-omni1 dhclient[19033]: exiting.
Jul 12 01:25:44 kg-omni1 kernel: xl0: link state changed to UP

Jul 12 01:25:45 kg-omni1 dhclient: New Broadcast Address (xl0): 255.255.255.255
Jul 12 01:25:45 kg-omni1 dhclient: New Routers (xl0): 84.215.128.1

Wow - I'm impressed.

2012-07-10: today I added the patch in PR bin/166656 to dhclient on my firewall. After making a new dhclient, I stopped the running one, copied the new one to /sbin and started it with dhclient xl0 again. Perhaps it will help when the WAN interface bounces down and up again. We shall see.

2012-07-09: the old modem (Cisco EPC2100R2 and accessories) returned via the postal service (Get sent me a pre-paid package slip).

2012-06-26: another service interruption. It seems when the interface on the WAN side (xl0) goes down and up again, I need to kill and restart dhclient, like this:

root@kg-omni1# killall dhclient
root@kg-omni1# dhclient xl0

Until I do that I cannot ping the gateway. after that, everything works fine again:

root@kg-omni1# ping 84.215.128.1
PING 84.215.128.1 (84.215.128.1): 56 data bytes

round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 4.319/5.061/5.956/0.677 ms

Annoying, very annoying. And it happened again. From /var/log/messages:

Jun 26 14:53:50 kg-omni1 kernel: xl0: link state changed to DOWN
Jun 26 14:54:00 kg-omni1 kernel: xl0: link state changed to UP

Like before, the remedy was to kill and restart dhclient:

root@kg-omni1# killall dhclient
root@kg-omni1# pgrep -lf dhclient
root@kg-omni1# dhclient xl0
DHCPREQUEST on xl0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67
DHCPACK from 10.234.128.1
bound to 84.215.134.159 -- renewal in 121798 seconds.

I must report this.

2012-06-24: service interruption. the link on the modem went down and up, but afterwards I wasn't online anymore. From /var/log/messages:

Jun 24 21:15:08 kg-omni1 kernel: xl0: link state changed to DOWN
Jun 24 21:15:21 kg-omni1 kernel: xl0: link state changed to UP

I checked the interface (ifconfig xl0) and everything looked allright, I could ping the interface (ping 84.215.134.159), but not the gateway (ping 84.215.128.1). I also checked that dhclient was still running - it was. Funnily enough it hadn't updated the leases file: /var/db/dhclient.leases.xl0 (in hindsight, that was a clue I should have paid attention to). So I powered the modem off and on, which gave these in /var/log/messages:

Jun 24 21:21:33 kg-omni1 kernel: xl0: link state changed to DOWN
Jun 24 21:22:05 kg-omni1 kernel: xl0: link state changed to UP
Jun 24 21:22:31 kg-omni1 kernel: xl0: link state changed to DOWN
Jun 24 21:22:44 kg-omni1 kernel: xl0: link state changed to UP

and another try:

Jun 24 21:33:20 kg-omni1 kernel: xl0: link state changed to DOWN
Jun 24 21:33:36 kg-omni1 kernel: xl0: link state changed to UP

But still the same trouble. After a while I killed dhclient (uising killall -HUP dhclient) and restarted it (dhclient xl0). That worked, I got the lease again (from /var/log/messages):

Jun 24 22:29:25 kg-omni1 dhclient: New IP Address (xl0): 84.215.134.159
Jun 24 22:29:25 kg-omni1 dhclient: New Subnet Mask (xl0): 255.255.192.0
Jun 24 22:29:25 kg-omni1 dhclient: New Broadcast Address (xl0): 255.255.255.255
Jun 24 22:29:25 kg-omni1 dhclient: New Routers (xl0): 84.215.128.1

Now I only need to figure out why dhclient didn't work correctly. For the record, here are a few items when everything is working:

tingo@kg-omni1$ ifconfig xl0

2012-06-23: dhclient is getting bogus offers. From /var/log/messages:

Jun 22 16:24:57 kg-omni1 dhclient[82793]: option classless-routes (111) larger than buffer.

I wonder what that is all about.

2012-06-19: testing with speedtest.net: 31.71 Mbps down, 5.10 Mbps up - this was the best result of several tests.

2012-06-19: today I received the new modem (fetched from the post office), a Cisco EPC 3010. Details of the new modem are: 1 x Cisco EPC3010 cable modem (serial no: 235842976, MAC addr: e448c7b4cc96, usb MAC: e448c7b4cc97, Modem no: 180204150), with external power adapter (model: 3A-122WT12, 12 VDC, 1.0A, centre positive). Later in the evening, all lamps on the old modem (EPC2100) started flashing (indicating "network access denied"). A bit later still, and I got a text messages stating tha my new modem was activated. I replaced the modem and the PSU, and connected it all up. After a few false starts, the modem connected, and my firewall / gateway got a link. Still, I couldn't ping anything. In the end, I had to do:

root@kg-omni1# ifconfig xl0 down
root@kg-omni1# ifconfig xl0 up
root@kg-omni1# dhclient xl0
DHCPREQUEST on xl0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67
DHCPACK from 10.234.128.1
bound to 84.215.134.159 -- renewal in 102858 seconds.

and I was online again.

2012-05-31: Get answered: modems are expected to be in stock again in late June.

2012-05-30: I sent a follow-up question to Get: when do they expect to have modems in stock again.

2012-04-04: Get answered that I need a new modem ( a so-called Cisco 3.0 or 3.1 modem) to get speeds above 20 Mbps. They are currently out of these modems, but will contact me when they are back in stock.

2012-04-02: I powered off and on the modem, to check if my speed had been upgraded. Nope - still 20 / 2 (measured to 19.95 / 2.05 via speedtest.net).

2012-03-30: Get announced speed upgrades to their services. For Bredband M the new speed is going to be 30 Mbps down, 5 Mbps up. The price remains unchanged, at NOK 479.- per month.

2012-03-03: I (finally) set up provider email on my main workstation, using Sylpheed + py-spambayes from ports. Spambayes is currently configured to check both the old (NGT) and the new (Get) email . It works.

2012-02-21: Get - picked up the package from the post office. 1 x Cisco E2500 wireless router, 1 x USB modem, 1 x SIM card. The usb modem is a Huawei E173 (info here). On the inside, it says "Model: E173u-2" and IMEI number. (IMEI is: 861961014394838). There is room for a microSD card below the SIM card.

2012-02-18: Get - answer from Get support (email): they have now ordered 1 x Cisco E2500 wireless router and 1 x USB modem (+ SIM card), delivery via mail.

2012-02-16: Get - sent request to Get support, asking for the wireless router and usb "mobile broadband" modem.

2012-01-30: Usenet news - Eternal-September works. You need to register.

2012-01-30: observations - my Mac mini (G4, OS X) does Multicast DNS traffic now and then.

2012-01-30: mail - getmail.no - does it support IMAP?

2012-01-30: mail - It seems Get blocks port 25 (SMTP) out. For the NGT-mail, I switched to port 587 (authenticated, too) and that works well.

2012-01-29: web servers - I can't access my (local) web servers via their DynDNS name (= public ip address) from inside my network. From anywhere else on the internet access works. Seems like my current firewall setup (ipfw + natd) is missing "nat loopback" (see here) functionality.

2012-01-29: more testing - switched my internal network over to the new ISP by connecting the firewall to the modem. I had to make changes on the firewall. External interface needs to be DHCP, like this:

ifconfig_xl0="DHCP"

(in /etc/rc.conf) But that overwrites /etc/resolv.conf, and since I have a local dns server I don't want that. Fixed by creating /etc/dhclient-enter-hooks with the following content:

root@kg-omni1# more /etc/dhclient-enter-hooks
# avoid overwriting /etc/resolv.conf
add_new_resolv_conf() {
        # We don't want /etc/resolv.conf changed
        # So this is an empty function
        return 0
}

That's all.

2012-01-28: testing. Connected a laptop (running Xubuntu) to the ethernet port on the modem and booted it. It cam right up - public ip address, and Get's name servers. Tested with speedtest.net, I get 19.58 - 20.12 Mbps down and 2.10 - 2.12 Mbps up. Not bad.

2012-01-28: installation. I connected the splitter (the TV plug is in the middle, but I got the cable adapters to fit - barely). Connected the modem, and powered it up, the "power" light turned on.. After the "cable" light had blinked a few times, it turned a steady green (on). Now I must test the connection.

2012-01-28: broadband - the package includes:

1 x Cisco EPC2100R2 cable modem (serial: 241605801, MAC addr: 00252ed8fd6c), with external power adapter (model: 3A-122WT12, 12 VDC, 1.0A, centre positive)
1 x splitter model MCP-03
1 x antenna cable
1 x adapter for antenna cable (converts from screw connector to plug-in connector)
1 x network cable
1 x installation manual.

2012-01-28: I picked up the package from Get at the post office. Two boxes, one for broadband (Internet access) and one for Digital TV (decoder ++). No sign of the wireless router or the usb modem for "mobile broadband".

2012-01-26: I ordered "Bredbånd M (20/2)" from Get. At the same time I also ordered the Digital TV "Start" package. Get advertising says the a wireless router and a usb modem for "mobile broadband" will be included.
